Sneak Peek into Orange County’s Organic Farmyard
From the escalating international food crisis to spiraling energy costs to even the surging global climate, it’s no wonder environmental issues have become a recently increasing concern. Fortunately, in the midst of San Juan Capistrano’s thriving cityscape, South Coast Farms has been gaining traction addressing these key issues for years.
Future plans for the site prove Southern Californians have just gotten started when it comes to leading the way in environmental sustainability and eco-consciousness. Already, San Juan Capistrano’s rich cultural and agricultural history have enabled this local farmyard to have a favorable impact by producing organically grown crops while advocating a need for environmental change.
Evan Marks, a life-long environmentalist and sustainability expert and systems designer, saw the opportunity to collaborate with South Coast Farms by supplementing it with an exciting, new educational center on-site. Marks and a dedicated team of local volunteers and eco-minded businesses have been actively working to cultivate support and awareness toward the forthcoming venture called The Ecology Center.
“The Ecology Center’s mission is founded on the principle that people can make a difference. I firmly believe that individual actions can transform the community,” said Marks. “I hope that the implementation of an interactive learning center will empower local citizens and businesses alike to adopt strategies that invigorate and enhance our natural environment. I envision that one day our collective actions will secure a better future for generations to come.”
The Ecology Center aims to not only involve, but to inspire people in the preservation of the regional environment through fun, hands-on activities and eco-friendly workshops.
“The solutions we’ll be demonstrating are designed to empower individuals to embrace green living,” Marks added. “We are here to answer all questions address the challenges associated with green living as well to help individuals realize that everyday actions can really bring about great change.”
Some of the key features planned for The Ecology Center include seasonal exhibits, outdoor demonstrations and educational programs to address key contemporary environmental issues and topics such as sustainable agriculture, ecological design, everyday home solutions as well as energy and water conservation. Additionally, there will be a resource center that will provide materials to further expand on such environmental concepts.
“What’s great about the Ecology Center is that it will be accessible to all Orange County residents,” added Marks. “We’ve got a lot of fun and creative activities in store for the entire community that the whole family will enjoy!”
Weekly educational programs for youth and adults are already underway to raise environmental awareness. It is currently anticipated that the Ecology Center’s venue will be up and running at the historic Congdon House by the end of this year.
Got a craving for locally grown crops? Or how about attending an on-site demonstration on edible and water-friendly landscaping? Simply put, getting involved in such eco-minded initiatives is a practical way to make a difference.
